Celebrate
Forming families by adoption is cause for celebration (as well as many other things!). Some families do so quietly and privately, others with lively gatherings of families and friends. That's the thing, whatever feels right for your family....is right!
Adoption showers and special "welcome home" gatherings are starting new traditions, that really speak to the "Adoption Constellation". Have fun starting your own traditions!
In open adoptions, or sometimes even in ones that aren't, Entrustment Ceremonies are a very meaningful way of honouring the choices of birthfamilies as well as the commitment of adoptive parents and their families. We held our entrustment ceremony when our daughter Diana was 6 weeks old, in the chapel of a church in which my mother was a member. It was very private, and moving, and I believe it will be a wonderful reflection for Diana as she grows up.
If you have stories and suggestions on how your family celebrates adoption that you would like to share, please send them along! We would love to hear them!
